TAS heading for another wet and windy blast

Kim Westcott, Wednesday May 27, 2015 - 13:30 AEST

After a relatively quiet weather week in Tasmania, another round of howling wind and heavy rain is on its way.

A large high pressure system has been sitting over the state for nearly a week now, causing cooler but generally dry conditions. As this high reluctantly shifts east, series of cold fronts will bring a return to the wild and windy weather.

Showers will begin to develop about western and southern parts ahead of the first cold front today. Falls are likely to be heaviest in the northwest corner, but generally less than 10mm is expected.

However by Thursday, the rain will have set in. Falls of 25-50mm are possible in the northern and western parts of the state, while eastern and sheltered districts will only see the odd shower.

From Friday until around Sunday the heaviest falls are likely to be in the west and in the highlands, with 10-20mm likely each day. By the end of the week, up to 100mm is expected for western locations. Winds will be gusty with the passing of these fronts, particularly about higher elevations and exposed coastal areas, which may clock gusts of 100km/h or more.

There will be a lull in the wild and windy weather for the first day of winter, as a high settles back over the state, bringing calmer conditions throughout.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
