A country of contrasts

Guy Dixon, Friday November 27, 2015 - 06:20 AEDT

Australia lived up to it's reputation yesterday, with a vast contrast in conditions across the states.

The nation's southeast was lashed by a front on Wednesday night, which was reminiscent of a winter set up. This front generated blustery showers and isolated thunderstorms as it passed, however the most interesting feature came in the wake of this system in the form of snow. Reports of snow falling as low as 350 metres came out of the Western and Central Plateau districts, where places like Mt Read failed to warm over -1 degree yesterday.

In contrast to these freezing temperatures, northern parts of NSW sweated through another scorcher, with the mercury climbing into the high thirties for a number of coastal locations, including Sydney CBD. Just to the north, Williamtown rose to a blistering 41 degrees.

A cool change has been moving up the coast, bringing much needed relief from the heat. Sydney Airport and Sydney Harbour both managed to drop 10 degrees within the space of 10 minutes, whilst locations further inland had to wait a little longer for a less dramatic drop in temperatures.

Overnight it was initially challenging to sleep in the east, due to the warm and humid conditions, but thankfully the temperature slowly fell further.

The coming days are likely to be mild over much of the nation's southeast, with the effects of this front lingering until the next warming trend early next month.
