A day of two halves for Sydney

Saturday proved had two very distinct halves on Saturday with a grim morning giving way to a glorious afternoon.

Sydneysiders awoke to thick cloud and rain on Saturday morning thanks to a passing trough. Although most of the rain was just before the sun came up, lingering showers made Saturday sport feel decidedly wintry. While the kids ran around in the rain, parents popped their umbrellas in an attempt to keep dry.

To 9am on Saturday 8mm reached the gauge in the city. The highest falls were in St Ives and Seven Hills where 12mm fell. Showers today added another 4mm in the city taking the monthly total to 16mm. Despite the heaviest rain of the month this July is still likely to be the driest since 1995 with no further rain forecast.

The thick cloud brought a mild evening with the mercury dipping to just 13 degrees overnight. The same cloud kept the warmth of the sun out of the Sydney Basin this morning. At midday it was just 13 degrees - no warmer than the overnight temperature.

The trough moved east during the afternoon allowing the cloud to clear. By 2pm it had warmed to just under 18 degrees under sunny skies. The miserable morning was long forgotten.

The Harbour City can look forward to stunning finish to the month with mostly sunny skies and above average day time temperatures forecast every day.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
