A squally sequence of systems in TAS

Tristan Meyers, Monday May 16, 2016 - 13:04 AEST

A relentless series of fronts has been impacting Tasmania over the last week or so, with another strong system on its way tonight.

Unique to this particular system will be the squall line of storms that are currently tracking towards the Apple Isle. Storms could actually contain the strongest winds, with damaging winds a significant risk in any storm.

Nevertheless, wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible along the west and north coasts along with the western ranges later today.

A damaging wind warning is already present for King Island, North West Coast, Central North North East and Western.

Showers could be heavy as well. Widespread totals in excess of 25mm are a high risk across the Western and North West Coast, but will be lighter across eastern parts of TAS.

The front will make landfall this evening, and with it, the wind and thundery showers. For eastern parts, including Hobart, the strongest winds will actually be tomorrow afternoon as winds turn more westerly. However, Mount Wellington is likely to experience gales from this afternoon and into tomorrow.

By tomorrow evening, winds will be much lighter, and the showery activity will be constrained the the west. However, this system won't mark the end of this blustery sequence. Another, potentially stronger, cold front looks to arrive this Thursday.
