Adelaide: House of mist and fog

Max Gonzalez, Saturday August 13, 2016 - 13:33 AEST

Adelaidians woke up this morning in the midst of thick fog that engulfed the city
since the early hours of the morning.

A combination of high humidity in cool but light onshore winds and relatively clear
skies have created conditions for shallow fog to develop across the City of
Churches.

Unfortunately, the shallow fog caused major disruption to the transport network
including Adelaide Airport itself. International flights were diverted to Melbourne as
fog reduced visibility to just a mere 100m at 5:30 am this morning.

Fog was not isolated to Adelaide, as many parts of southern SA experienced a
similar eery atmosphere with visibility as low as 700m in Kingscote, 500m in
Nuriootpa, 200m in Parafield, 150 in Ceduna and 100m in Elizabeth.

The fog gradually lifted, burning off by the late morning as temperatures gradually
rose under the gleaming sun.

More fog is on the cards for tomorrow, although drier northwesterly winds are likely
to hinder its formation making it less dense and patchier.
