Alice Springs warming after a deep freeze

Craig McIntosh, Monday July 18, 2016 - 13:50 AEST

After a run of well below average temperatures, the Alice is finally creeping into the warmer side of the thermometer.

As a cold front passed to the south mid last week, a broad high pressure ridge took a grip on the cold air and circulated it around the Red Centre. The winds were gentle, the air was dry and as a result the mercury dropped.

Friday 15th was a significantly cold morning for Alice Springs. Around 7am thermometers dipped to almost -4 degrees, a freezing eight degrees below the July average minimum, and the coldest morning in a year.

Daytime temperatures hovered around five-to-six degrees below the monthly average a couple of days prior to Friday and then stayed below the mean across the weekend.

The below average temperatures have continued until today. This morning dipped just south of three degrees, just over a degree below the average of four degrees for July. This afternoon, however, will be the first time in a week the mercury climbs above the mean temperature for this month, with a top of 22 expected.

The heaters can be unplugged for the rest of the week with a warm airmass thankfully streaming over Alice Springs. The peak of this heating, Thursday, is likely to reach 28 degrees, a glorious eight above average with sunny skies.

The weekend will see some cooling as a series of fronts push colder air to the north, however the days and nights will be much warmer than the freeze felt over the week just gone.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
