Becoming blizzard-like as snowfalls intensify on Australian Alps

After 20-30 centimetres of recent fresh snow, two more major fronts between Saturday and Monday will ensure the biggest snowfalls of the season so far, bringing an additional 40-70cm to all major resorts, even including Selwyn.

Some resorts should gain about 50 centimetres worth on Sunday alone, most likely Buller, Hotham and Falls Creek. By early next week we should see natural snow depths of 120-160cm at all major resorts.

However, it will be a challenging weekend on the slopes due to strong and gusty winds blowing snow, making it blizzard-like at times with poor visibility. Wind has potential to gust as strong as 100-110km/h, prompting a Severe Wind Warning to be issued.

Thankfully conditions will improve from Tuesday until Thursday, providing an excellent window of opportunity to enjoy the fresh deposits that will have accumulated.

A weak front late next week should bring a small replenishment of snow, followed by another similar system a few days later.

Generation gone with the wind

13:20 AEST A weeklong stretch of low wind power was broken on Wednesday evening, as a weak cold front marched across southern Australia. The chart below shows that the National Electricity Market (NEM) has endured a weeklong stretch of low wind generation, with wind power providing around 6% of the NEM’s electricity, down from last year’s average of 13.1% (Mon, April 15 to Wed, April 17).
