Big falls across Australia's Red Centre

Kim Westcott, Sunday May 19, 2019 - 12:37 AEST

Central Australia has received a solid soaking over the weekend.

Over the past 48 hours, Bond Springs has received 63mm, 33mm was recorded at Wigley George and Mount Lloyd and Alice Springs Airport picked up 26mm. Mount Sir Charles saw 36mm in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday.

For Alice Springs and surrounds, the wettest months of the year are November to March. The driest months are August and September, typically with a monthly rainfall amount of less than 10mm.

Thunderstorms where once again plentiful with this system, with nearly 5000 strikes recorded within 100km of Alice Springs airport since Saturday morning.

Across the border into South Australia, Ernabella picked up 23mm over the past 48 hours, making it the most rain the town has seen since early December. Mount Dare saw 19mm in the rain gauge.

This rain is courtesy of a moisture-laden slow moving low pressure trough, which is now weakening as it moves southeast.
