Blocking high to bring frosty nights to NSW

Craig McIntosh, Tuesday August 9, 2016 - 15:22 AEST

A run of frosty nights are in store once a high pressure system takes over from a passing cold front mid-week.

Wednesday will be a mixed day for New South Wales as the front crosses the state. Northwesterly winds prior to the front will bring a mild winter day to the north and east, while cities and towns left in the wake of the front will feel the colder winds. West of the ranges, maximum temperatures are likely to range from the low-teens in the south to a balmy mid-to-high twenties in the north.

From Thursday, the cold airmass will prevent most of western NSW from climbing over 20 degrees. Mungindi should cool by as much as seven degrees.

A broad, slow-moving high pressure system is set to build from Thursday, filling the void left behind from the cold front. Generally clear skies will accompany the high, meaning days will be pleasant yet nights will cool down significantly. This can be good and bad news for farmers. The mostly dry conditions will make life a bit easier when tending to any new offspring on the farm, however frost is likely to affect many places from later in the week. Much of the state is in for a particularly cold night Thursday into Friday morning, with frost a severe risk stretching across the west, over the ranges and even into our east.

The high pressure system will linger for most of next week, blocking any significant frontal activity until late in the week. In the days leading up to this front, winds from the northwest will bring warm temperatures. Northern NSW in particular will likely see the mercury spike in the mid-to-high twenties before the front brings a cool change. Another high pressure system looks to build in the wake of that front, however it is unlikely to stick around long with frontal activity becoming more regular in the week following.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
