Brisbane thawing out after cold start

Brisbane is enjoying a warm day after its coldest morning in two years.

The city dipped to a chilly 5.9 degrees shortly before 6am today, which is its lowest temperature since July 2015.

The cold start came after clear skies and light winds last night allowed the previous day's heat to radiate away from the surface overnight.

Fortunately for Brisbane locals that don't cope well in cold weather, the same clear skies today have allowed the sun to warm things up nicely. The mercury had climbed to a pleasant 25.3 degrees by 3:30 this afternoon, which is a few degrees above average for this time of year.

Today's temperature rise of almost 20 degrees from morning to afternoon is nearly double the the typical daily range at this time of year.

Looking ahead, Brisbane's daily temperature range won't be as large for the rest of the week, thanks to warmer mornings. However, above average daytime maximums will still require a switch from coats and Ugg Boots to shirts and thongs each day.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
