Canberra's cold start to spring

For most people, spring brings the hope of warm weather. Unfortunately for Canberrians, the first two mornings have been anything but spring-like.

With the past four mornings all recording minus three, it's been a definite shock to the system. The previous seven mornings were all well above-average, by as much as ten degrees. September mornings in Canberra typically average three degrees, while days average 16 degrees. For Canberra, the back-to-back cold mornings represent the coldest start to spring in three years.

Cloud and showers will move over Canberra tonight with a low pressure trough. Thick cloud will act as a blanket over the capital and trap in today's heat. Thursday morning will be much warmer, by at least five degrees, although it may not feel very warm with frequent showers. Showers will linger throughout Thursday, but will become more patchy in the afternoon, before clearing altogether by the evening.

Chilly mornings will make a return on Friday and over the weekend with the days reaching the mid-teens under mostly sunny skies.
