Canberra's coldest weekend mornings in 20 years

Ben Domensino, Friday June 30, 2017 - 18:39 AEST

Canberra is about to shiver through its coldest pair of weekend mornings in two decades.

A combination of cold air, clear skies and light winds will cause bitterly low minimum temperatures in the nation's capital city this weekend.

Lows of minus six degrees are forecast on Saturday and Sunday, which would make it Canberra's coldest pair of weekend mornings since 1997.

The last time Canberra experienced a weekend with mornings this cold, John Howard was in his first term as Prime Minister, Stuart Diver had just been rescued from a landslide at Thredbo and the film The Castle had just been released.

This weekend's back-to-back minus sixes would also make this Canberra's coldest pair of mornings in three years.

Minimum temperatures will climb closer to the July average of zero degrees from Monday as cloud and wind increase over the ACT early next week.
