Canberra's coldest winter since 2000

Canberrans have endured a much harsher winter than any in the past decade.

The average night in the nation's capital fell below freezing, with the average expected to finish up at -0.2 degrees (0.8 degrees below average). By the end of the month the city should record about 53 winter mornings below freezing, 10 more than normal.

Maximum temperatures have been about 0.7 degrees warmer than average for the season. When minimum and maximum temperatures are combined, Canberra Airport's winter comes out very close to average, yet it is still the coldest winter in 15 years.

It was also a fairly wet winter in the ACT, with Canberra collecting 157mm, which is 24% above average and the wettest winter since 2005. Most farmers in the area would have appreciated the extra rainfall which was fairly evenly spread across the winter months.

The outlook for spring is near to average in terms of rainfall. Temperatures should also be near to average, although there is a slight tendency towards cooler than average maximums.
