Clear skies for Origin opener

James Casey, Wednesday May 27, 2015 - 13:23 AEST

The stage is set for a fast flowing game to open the State of Origin series tonight.

Light winds and clear skies will make it a great game for players and spectators alike with perfect conditions for a night out at the footy.

At kick off the temperature will linger around the mid teens with light northeasterly winds. As the game begins to heat up the temperature will cool off, with winds set to turn to the northwest and the temperature to drop to the low teens by full time.

For Blues supporters heading out to the game, a warm jacket wouldn't be a bad idea. For Queenslanders traveling south for the game a beanie, snow jacket and gloves are probably best as this average Sydney night will feel more like an early winter night in Brisbane.

This cool and stable night is due to a high pressure system lingering over eastern parts of the state. It is set to weaken over the coming days as a low pressure trough moves across the state and bringing some light showers on Friday morning before a high brings drier conditions for the weekend.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
