Cold and wet start to weekend in WA's southwest

A deep low and associated cold front are crossing southwestern WA as we speak, leading to widespread rain, isolated storms and huge surf.

The front hit Perth around 9pm last night, delivering 31mm to 9am this morning. This was fairly representative of the Central West, Lower West and South West forecast districts. In Greater Perth, Swanbourne and Jandakot Airport picked up 34mm apiece, and Whiteman Park 36mm. The major outlier to these was Glen Eagle, getting drenched with 76mm.

Right now, northwesterly winds are continuing to send showers across the region, all the way from Carnarvon to the Margaret River. Another burst of showers with a southwesterly change is due for the capital early this afternoon (about 3pm WST).

The deep low generating all this weather is set to head slowly east into the Bight, which will bring fairly hazardous conditions to many coastal areas, especially the Leeuwin and Albany coasts. Seas there are expected to reach up to 4 metres today, with potential for a seven metre southerly swell. Seaside activities such as swimming and rock-fishing are not advised.

Conditions will ease later on Sunday and into Monday. Tuesday looks to be calm and mostly dry on the whole for the southwest. However, another front and low look to rise up into WA from Wednesday, delivering more rain, cold winds, and dangerous seas.
