Cold front batters Tasmania

Rob Sharpe, Thursday May 19, 2016 - 14:08 AEST

A strong cold front is lashing the Apple Isle with damaging winds and showers.

The cold front hit yesterday and continued to wreak havoc today, with wind gusts over 100km/h felt in many places across the state. There is a Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds currently active for all forecast districts, alongside a Gale Warning for all waters and a Sheep Graziers Warning for the North West Coast, Midlands, Central North, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, East Coast and North East.

The west coast felt the full brunt of the wind, with Mount Read recording gusts over 140km/h this morning whilst receiving 61mm of rain to 9am. A little further north, Cape Grim felt a blast of almost 110km/h just before 8am this morning.

The southeast did not escape the cold frontâ??s fury, with Mount Wellington copping a northwesterly gust of 111km/h this morning. Hobart has gathered almost 11mm of rain in the gauge in the last 24 hours as well as receiving gusts over 80km/h around 9:30am this morning.

To further add to the wild wind and rain, there are a few thunderstorms across the state. The good news is the weather will settle down into Friday for a mostly dry weekend across the state. Enjoy it while you can though, as come Sunday night the next cold front will be knocking on Tasmaniaâ??s door.
