Cold front blasts Tasmania

Drew Casper-Richardson, Sunday September 14, 2014 - 10:08 AEST

A cold front has marched across the Apple Isle early on Sunday morning bringing strong winds and showers.

Winds were strongest about the usual spots with Mt Wellington cracking the 100km/h mark with a gust of 106km/h just after 4am. Maatsuyker Island wasn't far behind at 98km/h. It wasn't as windy about low lying parts of the east. Hobart itself had a gust of 50km/h and the airport 56km/h.

Wind wasn't the only feature of the front. Heavy showers soaked parts of the west while the east remained relatively dry. Mt Read topped the rainfall with 32mm reaching the gauge to 9am on Sunday. Elsewhere Roseberry recorded 14mm and Butlers Gorge 12mm.

By the time the airmass had crossed the mountains it had largely dried out with generally only a few millimetres falling in the east. Hobart only received 0.8mm.

Southwest winds will remain strong and gusty for much of Sunday before easing during the late afternoon or early evening. Showers have mostly cleared and there is just a slight chance of isolated showers in the far south.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
