Cold front roars through southwest WA

On Friday and Saturday, southwestern parts of Western Australia were buffeted by damaging winds and rain with more on the way in the coming days.

A vigorous cold front swept through the nation's southwest on Friday night and into Saturday morning. Northwesterly winds ahead of the front peaked on Friday night at 113km/h at Busselton Jetty and 104km/h at Cape Naturaliste. A Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Winds was issued and then cancelled on Sunday morning as conditions temporarily eased.

Along with the cold front came squally showers, adding to what has already been a soggy August for parts of the state. There were widespread falls of 25-35mm with some places picking up more than 40mm. Jarrahdale recorded 45mm and Mount Solus 41mm while 20mm fell at Perth. With less than half of the month elapsed some places have already exceeded their average monthly rainfall including Dwellingup (196mm), Jarrahwood (165mm) and Bridgetown (140mm).

Although conditions eased a bit on Sunday morning another robust cold front is barrelling its way towards the same areas which felt the brunt of the last system. Showers and storms will continue throughout Sunday and winds will start to increase again during the afternoon. Winds will peak during the late evening and into the small hours of Monday morning. Gusts are likely to reach 90-110km/h over exposed coastal parts. Rainfall of 5-15mm can be expected with isolated higher falls likely. Severe Weather Warnings are like to be issued for this system.

Further bursts of wind, showers and storms are expected on Monday with another 10-20mm likely and localised falls of around 30mm with wind gusts approaching 100km/h for exposed areas. Another strong cold front will then impact southern parts of the state late on Tuesday. A high pressure system will then start bringing calmer conditions from Wednesday. Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld. The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
