We are almost halfway through June and the temperature in Alice Springs has dropped below zero a total of nine nights, with further freezing nights ahead.
A broad high pressure ridge has persisted since the beginning of winter, maintaining dry and mostly clear conditions. This has allowed temperature to drop like a stone over the interior of the country, with the temperature record for Alice Springs being testimony to this.
The running average minimum temperature for Alice Springs Airport so far this month is -0.9 degrees, which is well below the long term average of five degrees.
The city's coldest morning so far this month occurred on Sunday 11th, with the mercury dropping to a frigid -2.9 degrees. The temperature has not dropped this low in June for five years.
With the subtropical high looking to remain in charge for at least the next week, the continuation of the below average night-time temperatures is likely.
