Coolangatta saturated in wettest day in nine years

Southeastern QLD has seen widespread heavy rain persist, with 48 hour totals exceeding 200mm in some places.

In the past 48 hours Coolangatta and the Gold Coast have been soaked by over 200mm. The heaviest of this was in the last 24 hours with 176mm falling at Coolangatta, the heaviest daily rainfall in nine years, and 156mm on the Gold Coast, the heaviest in three years. Brisbane joined in on the action as well with over 150mm recorded in the last 48 hours with some very heavy periods, with 13mm falling in just 10 minutes.

Other suburbs that joined the hundred club to 9am this morning were Archerfield (105mm), Double Island Point (112mm), Beerburrum (135mm) and Maleny (101mm) showing just how widespread the heavy rain was.

A trough and associated low pressure system lingering over the southeast combined with persistent moist onshore winds to cause the torrential downpours.

Severe weather warnings for heavy rainfall have now been cancelled but flood warnings for the southeast are still in affect.

Over the weekend showers remain a risk, although nothing like the last 48 hours. Showers around 5mm are a chance each day, most likely in the afternoon and evening.

Southeast QLD shouldn't put away the umbrella just yet with early indications of another heavy rain event towards the end of the month.
