Cyclone season in full swing

Ben Domensino, Wednesday March 21, 2018 - 13:57 AEDT

The second tropical cyclone in the space of a week may develop to the north of Australia during the coming days.

A low pressure system located over the Arafura Sea has a high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone by Friday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

This would be the seventh tropical cyclone named in Australian waters so far this season, taking the name Nora if it develops.

The low pressure system has already gained a lot of attention during the past week, following the passage of Tropical Cyclone Marcus across the western Top End and Kimberley.

This overland journey included a damaging visit to Darwin last Saturday, which left trees and powerlines strewn across the city.

Fortunately for cyclone-weary Darwin residents, the low pressure system currently spinning over the Arafura Sea is expected to move towards the southeast in the coming days.

This track will most likely bring the system into the Gulf of Carpentaria on Friday or Saturday, where warm waters should help it gain strength.

The first part of mainland Australia to be impacted by this system is likely to be the Northern Territory's Arnhem District, with rain and wind increasing during the next 48 hours.

The future path of the potential cyclone is uncertain during the weekend and beyond. Forecast models still show a range of possibilities that could affect a broad area of northern Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Be sure to check the latest cyclone advisories during the coming days if you live in these areas.

Further west, Severe Tropical Marcus was upgraded to a category five system on Wednesday morning when it was located 950km to the northwest of Port Hedland.

Marcus is the strongest tropical cyclone in Australian waters so far this season and the strongest in the region since Cyclone Ernie last April.

Cyclone Marcus will move west during Wednesday, before turn towards the south on Thursday.

Marcus is likely to weaken as it moves south over the eastern Indian Ocean later in the week, most likely dropping below cyclone intensity on the weekend.

The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Marcus may cause rain or storms over the southwest of Western Australia, including Perth, from Sunday or Monday. Fortunately, the system will have weakened considerably by this point and is not likely to cause any weather that's not typical for this time of year.
