Ahead of an intense low pressure system currently sweeping the southern parts of the country, gusty northwesterly winds are thrashing the southern parts of SA.
Northwesterly winds strengthened overnight and this morning, reaching 120km/h on Kangaroo Island in SA, 110km/h at Mt Read in Tasmania, 100km/h at Strathalbyn in SA and the Grampians and Mt Buller in Victoria.
With soils currently saturated from good rainfall in recent weeks, tree falls and damage to infrastructure are extremely likely during the next 48 hours.
Severe wind warnings are currently in force in all southern states as the low slowly tracks east across southern Australian waters.
Wind will ease from Wednesday as the low crosses the southern Tasman Sea on its way to New Zealand.
