Dangerous fire weather returns to southeastern Australia on Saturday

Ben Domensino, Friday January 3, 2020 - 12:08 AEDT

A burst of hot and windy weather will cause a spike in fire danger across southern and southeastern Australia during the next two days.

After producing Catastrophic fire danger ratings in parts of Western Australia on Thursday, a pulse of hot air will be driven over central and southern Australia on Friday ahead of an approaching cold front.

Temperatures are forecast to reach the high forties in parts of South Australia on Friday afternoon, with Adelaide tipped to reach a top of 42. The city had already reached 35 degrees by 10:30am.

Friday's heat will combine with fresh and gusty winds to cause Severe and Extreme fire danger ratings across most of South Australia. This hot weather will persist until a blustery cool change sweeps across the state in the afternoon and overnight, reaching Adelaide around 9-11pm.

On Saturday, the hot and windy weather will shift across to southeastern Australia and bring with it elevated fire danger ratings.

Temperatures could reach the mid-to-high forties in parts of NSW and northern Victoria, with maximums a good chance of hitting the high thirties and low forties across the active fire grounds in both states.

Saturday's mix of hot, dry and windy weather will cause Severe to Extreme Fire Danger ratings for large areas of NSW, the ACT and Victoria, with Very High ratings forecast in Tasmania.

A blustery cool change will reach central Victoria on Saturday morning and eastern Victoria and on Saturday afternoon, before progressing up the southern and central coast and ranges of NSW on Saturday night and Sunday morning. This south to southwesterly wind change will bring a welcome drop in temperature, although the initial shift in wind direction will make fires difficult to control.

Thunderstorms with little if any rain are also possible in eastern Victoria and eastern NSW on Saturday, some of which could form from pyrocumulonimbus clouds near existing firegrounds.

Be sure to keep up to date with the latest fire information and warnings in southern and southeastern Australia during the next two days.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld.  The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
