Darwin feeling the 'chill'

Darwin just registered its coldest morning so far this year for the second day in a row.

Dry air, clear skies, and light offshore winds have combined to cause a string of relatively chilly nights in the western Top End this week.

Minimum temperatures at Darwin Airport dipped to 16.4 degrees on Wednesday morning and 16.2 degrees this morning. These were both Darwin's lowest temperatures so far this year and about three degrees below average for July.

But while the last two mornings have been cold by Darwin's standards, some other parts of Australia might not agree.

Melbourne is only forecast to reach a top of 14 degrees today and Hobart hasn't hit 16 degrees at all for almost two months. In Canberra, the mercury dropped to 1.8 degrees this morning and is forecast to hit -3 degrees tomorrow.

The lowest temperature on record at Darwin Airport was 10.4 degrees on 29th July 1942.
