Delightful Derby Day, Cool Cup

Ben Domensino, Wednesday October 26, 2016 - 15:10 AEDT

Melbourne's volatile weather will live up to its reputation during this year's Melbourne Cup carnival.

The two most popular race days of the carnival, Victoria Derby Day and Melbourne Cup Day, will sit on either side of a cold front this year.

Derby Day will be warm, dry and sunny. The mercury will climb to the mid-twenties on Saturday afternoon in light northerly winds. The only thing racegoers will need to consider is sun protection.

Melburnians have learnt through experience that nice weather doesn't usually hang around for too long at this time of year.

A cold front will sweep across Victoria on Sunday, causing showers and dropping the temperature by more than five degrees. Conditions will remain on the cool side early next week behind the front, with showers occurring at times.

Melbourne Cup Day is expected to be a cool affair with a chance of showers, most likely in the afternoon. The temperature is expected to top out at 18 degrees, making it the coolest Cup Day in five years and 13 degrees colder than last year's race day.

Those planning to attend both race days this year may need two outfits to account for the changing conditions. At the very least, a hat and an umbrella.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
