Dusting of spring snow

Snow fell on the alps in Victoria and NSW on Tuesday as a surge of cold air hit southeastern Australia.

While temperatures soared to 40 degrees in northern NSW on Tuesday afternoon, the mercury plunged below zero degrees in some elevated areas of southern NSW and Victoria.

Snow was falling on Mount Baw Baw throughout the day as the temperature hovered between zero and -1 degrees. By Tuesday afternoon, snow had also spread over the alps in northeast Victoria and southern NSW, including a dusting at Mount Hotham and Perisher.

The cold air also brought a dusting of snow to some elevated parts of Tasmania on Tuesday.

Despite the excitement around this bout of October snow, the spring thaw is well underway in the alps.

The natural snow depth at Spencers Creek in NSW was 147cm on Thursday, October 3rd, which is down from season's peak of 228.8cm on August 29th.
