Early bushfire season in parts of NSW

The 2019/20 bushfire season has started a couple of months early in parts of NSW, following another dry and warm start to winter.

A total of 12 Local Government Areas will start their Bush Fire Danger Period on August 1st, which is two months ahead of the statutory start date at the beginning of October.

From today, fire permits will be required for burning activities in the following 12 council areas: Armidale Regional, Bega Valley, Eurobodalla, Glen Innes Severn, Inverell, Kempsey, Mid Coast, Nambucca, Port Macquarie Hastings, Tenterfield, Uralla and Walcha.

The early start to the bushfire season follows the fourth warmest July on record and the driest June in 33 years for NSW as a whole.

It's worth noting that you can still use fires during the bush fire danger period, although there are some restrictions to ensure they are used safely.
