Early stab at Australia's Christmas extremes

Eight days out, forecasts suggest Christmas Day across Australia will be typically hot, humid and thundery in the north, windy in the south, wet in the southeast and dry on the west coast.

At this stage, our computer models tell us that a front should be crossing southern Australia, bringing a cooler, gusty change with a low pressure trough causing some rain over southeastern Australia and in the north of the country.

Possible estimated extremes eight days out are -

Hottest - 24-degree minimum and 43-degree maximum at Roebourne in Western Australia's Pilbara
Coldest - 4-degree minimum and 11-degree maximum at Mt Read in Tasmania
Wettest - 29mm at Camooweal in Queensland's northwest
Cloudiest - 3 hours of sunshine at Mt Isa in Queensland's northwest
Sunniest - 14 hours of sunshine at Nuriootpa in South Australia's Barossa Valley
Windiest - 80km/h at Mt Hotham in Victoria's North East
Calmest - 20km/h at Quirindi in New South Wales' North West Slopes and Plains

As we get closer to the day, models will change and accuracy will improve, giving us different places and amounts, so stay tuned for updates.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld. The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
