Earthquake felt in Darwin

A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake located in the Banda Sea, near Indonesia, could be felt across Darwin on Monday afternoon.

The strong earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 200 kilometres, near the southern Banda Sea at 12:23pm ACST on Monday, according to Geoscience Australia.

It is estimated that shaking could be felt up to 1,500 kilometres from the location of the earthquake, which includes northern parts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

There were reports that some people were evacuated from office buildings in Darwin as residents felt strong tremors shortly after midday.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported that there is no tsunami threat to Australia from this earthquake.

BoM declares El Niño over
