Easterly swell for eastern Australia

A large and powerful easterly swell is filling in along the east coast of Australia.

A deep low pressure trough over the Tasman Sea is interacting with a strong ridge of high pressure further south to steer a brisk easterly towards Australia's east coast.

As a result, these winds are whipping up a healthy three to four metre swell offshore, set to peak along the Hunter, Macquarie and Byron coasts leading into the weekend.

Conditions will be hazardous to say the least. Individuals participating in coastal activities are urged to take extra caution as surf conditions will be deceptively powerful.

If you're hoping to get a wave in before work next week, Sunday is shaping up to be the best day. As the swell eases, winds are likely to be lighter and offshore for most of the morning.

It is recommended that only experienced surfers tackle the tricky conditions this weekend.

Seas should begin to settle down early next week just in time for everyone to head back to the office.
