Expected widespread rain to top up the NSW water table

Jacobus Cronje, Tuesday June 14, 2016 - 15:42 AEST

Following the widespread rainfall across New South Wales earlier this month, a new system expected from Thursday is likely to bring healthy totals across the state, where soil moisture levels are already looking favourable for winter crops.

For large parts of NSW, current Root Zone moisture estimates, the percentage of water in the top 1m of the soil profile, are placed very much above average for this time of year, due mostly to the widespread rainfall event earlier this month.

Rainfall over the regions will therefore be a welcome addition to the soil moisture and dam levels, some of which have reported falling water levels, especially in the western parts of the state.

From Thursday, a strong cold front and associated upper trough are set to move in from the southwest, bringing a band of showers and isolated thunderstorms that will sweep over the state for the next four days.

Western parts are likely to receive 10-30mm from Thursday to Saturday, with another 5-10mm possible over the course of Sunday and Monday.

Rainfall over the central and eastern parts should peak on Saturday, when the system is likely to combine with an inland trough extending over the central parts of the state from western Queensland.

Although the system could bring heavy rainfall to a few areas west of the ranges from Friday, especially over the North West Slopes and Plains, 40-60mm is expected to fall over the central and eastern parts between Friday and Monday.

It looks likely that another East Coast Low will form over coastal NSW from Sunday as the trough moves eastward, bringing with it the possibility of high rainfall totals, flash flooding and damaging wind. However, these effects will mostly be felt along the eastern seaboard and adjacent inland.
