Fair weather for finals footy

James Casey, Thursday September 18, 2014 - 12:39 AEST

Clear skies and light winds provide pitch perfect conditions for finals footy this weekend.

A high pressure system is set to build and shift to the east bringing ideal conditions for a fast flowing, entertaining style of game for the finals series of both the AFL and NRL.

On Friday evening the Sydney Swans play the North Melbourne Kangaroos in Sydney's west at ANZ Stadium while the North Queensland Cowboys take on the Sydney Roosters at Sydney's Moore Park. Skies set to be clear, winds light from the south and the temperature hovering around the mid teens, allowing for ideal conditions for spectators and players.

On Saturday afternoon the Hawthorn Hawks take on the Port Adelaide Power at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. A weak front is set to pass to the south of Melbourne around the middle of the day bringing with it a weak southerly change. Don't let this ruin your afternoon as there will be no rain with this change and temperatures will reach the mid teens.

The Manly Sea Eagles play the Canterbury Bulldogs at Sydney's Moore Park on Saturday evening. A ridge of high pressure will direct southeasterly winds over the city while the mercury remains around the mid teens into the evening.

For other local and country footy grand finals on Saturday across nearly all of the country conditions will be dry and not too breezy, near ideal for footy. Sunday's SANFL Grand Final at Adelaide Oval between Port Adelaide and Norwood will be played in 22-degree sunshine.

Overall a great weekend for players and spectators alike so get outside and enjoy the spring weather.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
