First significant rainfall in months for Darwin

After months of no rainfall, Darwin finally saw its first significant falls yesterday with 14.6mm falling before 9am this morning.

The last time Darwin saw any notable rain was back in April when 184.8mm hit the gauge, with just over 90% of this falling in the first half of the month.

Since the end of April only 0.2mm has fallen, recorded at the end of August, meaning 5 months with next to no rainfall. This makes 2017 the driest dry season for Darwin on record.

The average rainfall for the dry season in Darwin is 45mm.

Comparatively, in 2016, the wet season lasted into May with 60.6mm falling in the first half of the month, with rain hitting the gauges again in mid September.

Showers and periods of rain will linger around for the remainder of this week, with 20-40mm of falls possible by the end of this coming Sunday.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
