Flooding lingers in NSW

Parts of western and southern New South Wales are still underwater, despite rain easing across most of the state in recent weeks.

The wettest April to September period on record for parts of central and western New South Wales culminated in widespread flooding during early spring. One of the standout events saw Forbes residents evacuate their houses as the Lachlan River climbed to a peak near 11 metres late in September.

While rainfall has eased notably during October, some rivers are still struggling to cope with the sheer volume of water making its way downstream.

The township of Hillston, north of Griffith, is experiencing major flooding today and is expected to see the Lachlan River peak on Sunday. There is also major flooding at Euabalong, although the water level is gradually easing as the peak moves further downstream away from the town.

The Murrumbidgee River is also overflowing. Major flooding is still affecting Hay, although the water level at Hay Weir is also easing, albeit slowly.
