Flooding rainfall event over NZ also blankets alps in snow

Jacobus Cronje, Sunday July 23, 2017 - 14:45 AEST

A complex series of troughs, fronts and an associated low pressure system led to heavy rainfall across New Zealand's South Island this weekend, also resulting in a fair bit of snow over the Southern Alps.

Severe weather warnings for flooding rain were also in place over parts of the South Island, notably for Canterbury and Otago.

Mt Lyford over northern Canterbury picked up about 70 centimetres of snow in 24 hours, with an estimated depth range of 140-170 centimetres currently over its peaks.

Elsewhere over the Canterbury Region, most peaks received between 20-30 centimetres, where nearly a metre of snow had already covered some areas.

From late on Monday and into Tuesday, another cold front should bring sleety rain and possible snow showers to South Island, most likely over the western parts.

Further systems are likely to impact the country through next week.
