Foggy start for the southeast

Parts of the southeast awoke to thick fog on Sunday morning with visibility dropping below 100 metres in some places.

A high pressure system sitting over the southeast brought ideal conditions for a foggy Sunday morning. Clear skies allowed day time warmth to escape, bringing cool temperatures and light winds in the early morning. These two factors combined with ample moisture at the surface saw fog start to develop in the small hours of the morning.

In Tasmania, visibility dropped to 400m at Launceston and 300m at King Island. On the mainland, Mt Boyce in the Blue Mountains had visibility drop to 500m. Fog was thickest about elevated parts of Victoria where visibility at Kilmore Gap fell to just 50m at times, and 200m at Latrobe Valley. Fog wasn't restricted to elevated parts though, with visibility in the coastal town of Warrnambol dropping to 150m.

An approaching trough and cold front will bring an increase in wind during Sunday and into Monday morning along with a warmer airmass, making a foggy start to the working week unlikely.

Satellites capture huge dust storm crossing Mediterranean Sea
