Freezing in the Red Centre

Sam Brown, Saturday June 27, 2020 - 12:32 AEST

Alice Springs had its coldest night of the year last night dropping to -0.8 degrees celsius at 7am this morning.

It was also the coldest night since July last year when it dipped to -1.1 degrees. Only the month before, in June 2019, the town dropped to a very chilly -3.2 degrees. However, the coldest June night recorded in the central Australian town was six below zero on the 30th of June, 2002. The long term average for minimum temperatures at Alice Springs in June is five degrees.

A combination of clear skies, light winds, and a cool air mass provided the ideal conditions to drop temperatures to such low levels. A large high pressure system over the southeast of Australia was the main driver for these conditions to prevail.

The high will maintain conditions for cold minimum temperatures over the next two nights before a low pressure trough passes through the region, drawing in warmer air from the north and allowing temperatures to only drop to about three to five degrees overnight from Monday night. Overnight temperatures should then climb just above the June average for the remainder of the week.
