Jack frost visited most of Melbourne this morning, with the Airport experiencing its coldest May morning in 26 years.
Temperatures plunged overnight in Melbourne, falling to 3.6 degrees in the city, its coldest May morning in five years.
It was also the coldest May morning in 10 years in Avalon (-0.2) and Sheoaks (-0.1) and the coldest in eight years in Frankston, falling to 4.3. The coldest in Melbourne was Coldstream, dropping to -2.3 degrees.
The vast majority of Melbourne's inland suburbs fell within a couple of degrees of freezing at the standard measuring height of 1.2 metres. If the thermometer was on the ground it would have shown temperatures below freezing in those areas, evidenced by frosted grass.
Sunshine is helping the mercury climb to 16 degrees today. The next few nights will also be chilly, but probably three to five degrees milder than this morning. Only the odd northern suburb should see any frost on the ground.
