Frosty calm in Tasmania ahead of cold fronts

Tasmania enjoyed a crisp, frosty but clear Sunday morning ahead of a cold, rainy week.

Minimum temperatures crept to below freezing over the Midlands, Upper Derwent and parts of the remaining interior. Hobart dropped down to just four degrees, thanks to relatively clear skies under a high pressure system.

The wind-calm day does not betray a hint of the successive cold fronts that are expected to lash the state anew later in the week. A series of cold fronts is expected to start impacting the southeastern parts of Australia from Monday 11th June, the first of these reaching Tasmania by Tuesday.

Gusty showers become likely each day from Tuesday for at least parts of the state, delivering widespread falls and potentially heavy rain during Thursday and Friday, when the more significant of the fronts and its associated low will cross the Bass Strait.

With the exclusion of the southeastern interior, where about 5-15mm could have accumulated by the end of the week, widespread falls 25-50mm are expected to have fallen over the remainder of the state by next weekend.

Wind returning to southeastern Australia

10:07 AEST After a prolonged period of light winds, a surge of powerful winds and cool air will push through southeastern Australia during the next 48 hours. As we wrote about last week the National Electricity Market (NEM) saw very low wind power generation during the seven days leading up to Thursday, April 18, with the daily wind generation having been under 41 GWh/day for this period. Wind power has improved slightly during the past week, with wind power increasing for a few days over last weekend.
