Frosty start to Tuesday

Cold air, clear skies and light winds will cause widespread frost across multiple states and territories on Tuesday morning.

The chilly mixture of whether ingredients will occur as a high pressure system moves across the eastern half of Australia in the wake of a series of cold fronts.

Temperatures are forecast to drop low enough on Tuesday morning for frost to develop in part of every state and territory, although it will be most prolific across the eastern half of the country.

Frost warnings have been issued in parts of Victoria and South Australia, where Melbourne and Adelaide are forecast to drop to four and five degrees, respectively. Hobart should also reach a brisk low of four degrees on Tuesday, while Canberra is tipped to be the coldest capital city in the country, dropping to around two degrees.

The frost could even develop as far north as Queensland's Atherton Tablelands, with Charters Towers forecast to reach three degrees early in the day.

Once the sun rises far enough and starts to melt the ice from the ground, it will be a dry and mostly sunny day for much of eastern and southeastern Australia.
