Gippsland heats up overnight

Warm northerly winds ahead of a vigorous cold front have left much of Victoria's Gippsland basking in overnight temperatures closer to summer averages.

Sale airport reached 13 degrees overnight, which was 9.7 degrees above the monthly average and the warmest July night in 67 years. This temperature was a stark contrast to the beginning of the month, where overnight temperatures dropped to a freezing -1.6 degrees.

Gelantipy's minimum overnight temperature reached 11 degrees, making it the warmest July night in 20 years. Mt Moornapa crept up to 12.3 degrees, making it the warmest night in July since 1994. Mount Nowa Nowa and Orbost were eight degrees above their July minimum average and warmly welcomed their warmest July night in 19 and 13 years respectively.

However, these warm temperatures will be all but lost, as overnight temperatures cool dramatically with the passage of the cold front later today. A very cold air mass will replace the warmth, along with a series showers.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
