Good run of swell for Victoria

James Casey, Sunday August 14, 2016 - 12:09 AEST

The start of a run of clean surf is on offer from Sunday morning for the Victorian coastline.

A 3.5 metre west-southwest groundswell has been filtering in across the Victorian coastline this morning, while light west-northwest winds keep conditions clean.

The large swell is fuelled by a series of cold fronts in the Southern Ocean. While the biggest of the swell will actually pass to the south of Australia, waves will still peak in the six to eight foot range at popular breaks. The period will peak at around 15 seconds meaning there may be some waits for set waves to materialise but waves will be powerful.

The light, offshore winds are due to a broad high pressure system sitting over the southeast of Australia.

Conditions are expected to remain good for the next few days as the swell continues to move in and winds remain from the northwest.

Winds will swing to the south on Wednesday as a weak front moves across the south of the state bringing an end to the run of good surf days for Victorians.
