Great alpine weekend ahead

Craig McIntosh, Friday August 5, 2016 - 11:02 AEST

Mostly sunny skies and good conditions will greet skiers and snowboarders this weekend, with conditions set to stay good until early next week.

It's been a mixed few days of late on the mountains, not much snow around and visibility has been generally poor. On the plus side, it has been cold enough to keep the snow guns roaring throughout the nights, keeping the snowpack in good shape and groomers have been ironing out the bumps.

Visibility on Saturday and Sunday are likely to improve as the sun pokes its head out a bit more than it has lately. As usual, the mountains will create their own clouds as the air is forced up the slopes and cools, however they are unlikely to completely block all the sunshine. No snow is expected to fall but with the snowpack in good shape there is little chance of rocks ruining your bases.

The large high pressure system that is keeping conditions stable is also blocking any cold front that attempts to cross the southeast. Come Monday, the high will push a front down over Tasmania which will likely deliver a couple of centimetres to higher elevations on the Apple Isle. A bigger front expected to hit early Wednesday looks like it has the strength to bump the high out into the Tasman Sea and give us the best falls in over a week, with 10-15cm likely to be left behind as the storm moves east.

A similar pattern is then expected following that front, with another high pressure system building and sticking around until another front late next weekend looks to bring plenty more alpine joy.
