Gusts and snow dusts for NSW and VIC

Sam Terry, Wednesday December 2, 2015 - 13:20 AEDT

A gusty cold front has brought entirely new weather to New South Wales in the last day, and even some late snow!

Many a New South Welshman experienced a sweaty night's sleep last night after a hot day. Most of the Sydney Basin saw temperatures remain above 30 degrees to almost midnight.

However, that all changed with the arrival of a significant southerly change, which hit Sydney airport at about 11pm. The mercury plummeted by 10 degrees in about 15 minutes. Southern localities, such as Bega on the South Coast, saw the change yesterday afternoon, causing an even greater drop of 15 degree within 45 minutes.

Winds gust ahead of the front brought some strong wind gusts. Dubbo Airport was whipped with a 91 km/h gust around 6pm on Tuesday. Winds of this magnitude have the ability to cause damage to property.

Behind the front, there was a small amount of snowfall across the VIC and NSW alpine regions. Falls Creek was dusted with around 5 cm, as was Hotham. A bit less feel across the border just outside of Jindabyne.

Despite the cooler temperatures and cloudy skies on the coasts today, temperatures will rise again over the coming weekend and into early next week, as warm northerly winds build across much of the east and south.

Winter is Coming: Chilly day for Sydney, rain pelts eastern seaboard

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld.  The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
