Gusty cool winds hit Tasmania

Tristan Meyers, Friday March 6, 2015 - 13:52 AEDT

A strong cold front has pummeled Tasmania, bringing gusty winds and heavy rain.

A severe weather warning was issued around 10:45pm last night for damaging winds as the front made landfall. Mt Wellington recorded an impressive 140km/h this morning. As the front swept across the state, the small town of Cressy recorded gusts of 83km/h, speeds it hadn't felt since late spring last year.

The front also dumped some heavy falls across Tasmania. The heaviest occurred on Mt. Read, which copped 104mm of rain. Meanwhile Luncheon Hill near Smithton had its heaviest March fall since 2013. Additionally, the region of Strathgordon has nearly received its entire March rainfall, with over 40mm falling yesterday.

Tasmania has had a blisteringly cold start to March, with four cold fronts already glancing the Apple Isle coinciding with the start of autumn. So far this month, Strahan is seeing 2.5 degrees below the March average.

More cold fronts are on the way over the next few days, bringing more rain and gusty showers.

Due to this windy weather, drivers should be wary of any debris on the road while driving today. Although conditions have begun to ease across the state, residents should monitor the latest Tasmanian warnings.
