Healthy rain spreads across NSW and QLD farmland

Rob Sharpe, Thursday May 21, 2015 - 12:16 AEST

Widespread rain has moved across western NSW and southern QLD, with some parts seeing their best rain since last spring.

A low pressure trough slowly moving northeast through NSW and southern QLD has produced widespread soaking rain, including to some of the driest areas.

Walgett gained 9mm of rainfall to help its severely depleted dams. Further north Lightning Ridge picked up 18mm - its heaviest rain since September. Wilcannia managed its best rain since August and its heaviest May rain in 12 years. Across the border Charleville gained a handy 12mm.

The rain band is still moving through northeast NSW and southern QLD today, bringing widespread falls of 5-20mm.

Farmers in western NSW are in with a chance of follow up rain today as an upper trough is moving east through the state producing showers and thunderstorms. Thunderstorms bring the risk of heavy downpours and small hail, possibly exceeding 40mm in parts. Late this morning storms were focused from Bourke to Cobar and should increase this afternoon.
