Heavy downpours for parts of southwestern WA

Guy Dixon, Saturday August 6, 2016 - 12:04 AEST

Thick cloud and slow moving showers extended over southwestern parts of Western Australia within a low pressure trough, delivering heavy downpours.

On Friday afternoon, 4.6mm fell within ten minutes at Kalgoorlie, going on to collect 8mm to 9am today, the heaviest rainfall since early June. On top of the 7mm that fell to 9am on Friday, Kalgoorlie is just over 5mm short of the August average.

While some of the heaviest falls were confined over the northern Gascoyne where Lyon River Airstrip picked up 9.2mm, Northam also picked up healthy falls with 7.2mm collecting in the gauge.

A series of fronts are bearing down, with more showers and thunderstorms already developing over the state's southwest, heaviest and most active along the coast. Sunday has the potential to receive between 10-15mm over the Lower West and South West, followed by another 10mm on Monday.
