Heavy rain hits Sydney

Sydney was drenched by its heaviest rain in three months on Monday.

A low pressure trough near the central coast of NSW caused showers across the Sydney Basin on Monday.

The wet weather was stopping and starting early in the morning, before a band of heavier rain swept over some eastern and central suburbs shortly before lunchtime.

The city's Observatory Hill rain gauge received 26mm between 9am and 2pm, including 14mm of rain in 20 minutes. This was Sydney's highest daily total in three months. Other notable totals during the four hours to 2pm included 46mm at Manly and 37mm at Mosman.

Monday's soaking comes a day after some southern parts of the city picked up more than 40mm of rain from the same system. Audley's 60mm of rain during the 24 hours to 9am on Monday was their best rain in eight months.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a road weather alert for Sydney's eastern suburbs on Monday, advising motorists to take 'extreme care' when driving where water had built up on roads.

The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
