Heavy rain tumbles down over Victoria

A broad low pressure trough crossing the southeast has brought heavy rain to parts of Victoria, with widespread totals exceeding 25mm.

The trough swept across the state during Saturday, bringing at least some rain to most of the state. The heaviest falls were recorded in the states southern half where falls of over 25mm were recorded as far west as Kanagulk (28mm) and as far east as Wilsons Promontory (26mm).

The highest total in the state was at Cerberus, where 42mm fell in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday. This was the highest one day total for September in 26 years and the highest of any month since February 2017. Avalon picked up 37mm and Sheoaks 31mm, the highest one day September total in 33 years and 22 years, respectively.

Melbourne missed the heaviest of the rain, though most suburbs picked up between 10-20mm. Frankston had the highest total of any Melbourne suburb with 23mm reaching the gauge. Melbourne Olympic Park recorded 12mm.

The rain cleared during Sunday morning, leaving just scattered showers over eastern parts of the state. A cold front will clip the far south late on Sunday evening, bringing isolated showers to central parts of the coast. A high pressure system will then develop, bringing more settled conditions from Tuesday.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
