Heavy storms soak eastern NSW

Ben McBurney, Wednesday March 25, 2015 - 11:51 AEDT

Rain and thunderstorms swept across eastern New South Wales yesterday, bringing strong winds and the best rain in months to some parts.

A broad low pressure trough packed with moisture crossed the state ahead of a front, triggering off yet another day of thunderstorms in what has been a stormy week.

The North West Slopes and Plains copped the worst of it again, mere days after cricket ball size hail hit parts of the region.

Gunnedah recorded 24mm to 9am, including 11mm in just 10 minutes, its best rain since August. Coonabarabran copped 91km/h wind gusts as well as 16mm in just 10 minutes as part of an eventual total of 39mm.

Further south, cloud and rain was more prominent, however a few noisy thunderstorms still managed to develop and give the region some healthy totals.

Both Norah Head and Nowra had their best fall since January recording 37mm and 47mm respectively, including 10mm in just 10 minutes at Norah Head.

In Sydney, notable totals included 35mm at Prospect and Abbotsford, 31mm at Olympic Park and 30mm at Manly.

A much drier southwesterly flow will confine any thunderstorms to the far northeast of the state for the remainder of the week as a much more typical autumn pattern sets in.
